My primary research stream lies in the area Operations and Supply Chain Strategy. My dissertation work focuses on the behavioral aspects of inter-firm relationships in three distinct yet related ways. The first study is aimed towards gaining an in-depth understanding of the nuances in inter-firm relationships using a case-based approach. For this study, I conducted in-depth interviews with several individuals from seven companies in different industries. I then analyzed the qualitative data using Grounded Theory (GT) methodology to develop a framework that captures the evolution of inter-firm relationships and the defining characteristics in each phase of evolution. The second study captures the role of supply chain leadership (SCL) styles in the development of inter-firm relationships using a survey methodology. I analyze the influence of SCL styles on relationship outcomes using 248 observations. In the third study I attempt to understand how supply chain managers make decisions with respect to inter-firm relationships described by varying degrees of risk using an experimental design. Specifically, I use experimental data from roughly 200 supply chain practitioners to capture the impact of variability in pay and socioemotional wealth on decision making with respect to inter-firm relationships.

In my dissertation, I employ a multi-theoretic and multi-method approach to inform my research questions. I incorporate theories from other disciplines such as organizational theory, strategic management, and organizational behavior while using case studies, surveys, and behavioral experiments as my research questions warrant. Working closely with managers, I am able to frame empirically grounded research questions for which I can offer practical solutions and guidelines.
